Planning to visit Argentina can be really challenging not only because of how much this country has to offer, but also because of its different climates. We have put together a month-by-month guide of the weather that will help you figure out what the best time is to visit Argentina:

January

Summers in Argentina fall between December to February with the temperatures peaking in January. And it is not just the temperatures that are at their peak, but also the crowds and consequently, the prices. If you’re planning on visiting the beautiful and picturesque Patagonia, you should maybe reconsider, because January is not the best time to visit since there are very limited places in the Refugios. However, if you book well in advance, you might still have a chance to get one. Average daily temperature is 26 C which ranges from highest of 33 C and lowest at 19 C degrees.

February

February is a great time to go if you want to see the Iguazu Falls at their fullest. But this is also when they are the wettest and hence travelling may become a bit dangerous as access to San Martin Island and the surroundings may be closed. The south can also become particularly windy in the summer months. However, if you want to enjoy the summer warmth, then this is as good of a time as any to visit. Average temperatures range between 18 C and 32 C degrees.

2

March

With Fall season rolling in, March is a lovely month in terms of the Fall foliage with highest temperature rise up to 29 C. If you plan on trekking the mountains, visit earlier, before the winters arrive in the south. This is also when the Carnival (which starts in January) is coming to an end, so you can get a chance to glimpse the colorful, vibrant and rich culture of Argentina through its exciting parades, dances, costumes and floats.

April

April is a nice time to go see the Iguaza Falls because the weather is pleasant. Similarly, visiting Patagonia and Mendoza’s winelands during April is also recommended because there are smaller crowds and the changing colors due to Autumn provide ample opportunities for splendid nature photography. Average weather temperature in April stays between 11 C to 25 C degrees making it pleasant for the tourists.

3

May

The weather in May is relatively cool and pleasant, making it a nice time to explore Esteros de Ibera, Argentina’s wetlands and do some wildlife spotting. There are some parts of Patagonia that can become hard to access because of the snow that blocks the way, but the northern region is usually open. If you’re lucky, you may even get to spot the rarely-seen puma among other big cats.

June

Because it is the middle of the winters, June marks the start of Argentina’s ski season, mainly around the Bariloche area. Then in the later parts of the month, at the Peninsula Valdes, southern right whales arrive, allowing for a great whale watching experience. Due to the blizzards that can cut off towns, it is advisable not to go the southerly regions. Temperature in June can drop to as low as 7 C degrees.

4

July

July is one of the national holiday seasons and as a result, crowds start to swarm many locations, the prices shoot up and booking for hotels can become a bit problematic. Of course, all of these things can be avoided if you plan ahead of time because July is one of the nicer months to visit in terms of the weather which has a nice temperature ranging between 5 and 19 C degrees.

August

August is another great time to visit Argentina as the mornings are refreshing and the evenings are cool, which makes exploring the city and the wild outdoors a very lovely experience. August is also the time for the Buenos Aires Tango Festival, which is a two week long event featuring world class performances from the best tango dancers as well as art exhibitions and other displays of Argentinian tradition and culture.

5

September

Spring in Argentina starts some time around September and goes on till November. This is a perfect time to visit the country as it comes alive with wildflowers, the weather is comfortable and the crowds small. It is an especially great time for wildlife lovers to visit for they can expect to see seals, whales, penguins and lots of other sea birds in areas like the Peninsula Valdes. Average minimum temperature remains around 9 C degrees in this month whereas it can go up to as high as 24 C.

October

Places like the Lake District around Bariloche become carpeted by wild flowers, adding to the scenic beauty of the place and providing a gorgeous backdrop for nature photography. October weather is pleasant enough to enjoy a number of outdoor activities like hiking, cycling and backpacking around the countryside. As the weather gets warm, the temperature ranges between 12 C and 27 C degrees.

6

November

Bueno Aires is at its prime time during the month of November. Like October, the weather is still pretty mild and outdoor activities plenty. With the onset of this month, trees like Jacarandas blossom, wildlife migrates back, and a number of festivals all around the country spring up. If you visit in November, you can also avoid the large crowds that you can expect to see during the month of December. This month is also ideal to go visit the landscape of Salta, which is usually arid, but during November becomes lush and lively.

December

With summer at its peak, the weather shoots up but still does not become unbearably uncomfortable. This is a peak time for tourists and visitors from home and abroad, so many sight seeing places become crowded. It is also a high season in Patagonia and the time when the Iguaza Falls become the wettest. With Christmas right around the corner, festivities are at an all time high, the excited energy is contagious, and malls and shopping places get swarmed with people to get their holiday preparations done on time. In short, if you don’t mind crowds, you can visit the country in December, however if dealing with lots of people on your holiday is not what you have in mind, then you should wait a little while longer before planning a trip to the country.
